An important role in treatment of varicose veins is played by conservative treatment ensuring good results in the early stage of the disease when skin manifestations and disability are only moderate. There are two options of conservative therapy approved at the moment: compression therapy and administration of venotonic drugs.

One of the best studied remedies used for treatment of varicosis for many decades is the horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) with biological action expressed in the elevated tonus of pathologically dilated veins, accelerated blood flow, reduced capillary fragility and permeability, improved histotrophic nutrition in affected regions in case of restricted blood supply and edema. The use of horse chestnut extract for treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is supported by a vast evidence basis.
